Hellenic Photographic Society of Iraklion, GPU PHOTO CENTER
The Hellenic Photographic Society of Iraklion, Crete, founded in 1964, is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the art of photography, renowned for its iconic portraits and impactful photography education, with 60 years of exhibitions, workshops, and collaborations that continue to inspire both Greek and international photography communities.

The Hellenic Photographic Society of Iraklion, Crete, was established in 1964 in Iraklion by a group of friends united by their passion for photography. The journey has been both challenging and rewarding. The Society is a non-profit organization with over 200 active members, dedicated to promoting the art of photography and teaching both its techniques and aesthetics.

In 2024, we celebrate 60 years of continuous presentation. Throughout these years, the Society has consistently worked to advance the techniques and aesthetics of photography. It has also fostered the creation of numerous remarkable photographs and projects by its talented members. One of the most iconic contributions is the series of intense portraits of older individuals set against black backgrounds. These portraits have established a significant trend in artistic portraiture, known as the “Cretan School of Photography,” which has excelled in international competitions and garnered numerous awards.

A notable contribution by the Society is the operation of a beginners’ department since 1980. These seminars have been conducted continuously for over 45 years, training and initiating more than 2,000 individuals in the art of photography.

Today, with the same love and dedication, the Hellenic Photographic Society of Iraklion continues its journey through ongoing activities, photography exhibitions, events, workshops, presentations, and collaborations with prominent photographers and institutions, both in Greece and around the world. Additionally, it boasts an impressive collection of photographic books, albums, and magazines in its library. The Society aims to encourage more and more people to engage not only with photography but with all forms of art and culture.
